Breast Reduction

Liposculpture to the female breast is an increasingly commonly performed procedure. Many women are burdened by large breasts and complain of aching neck, back pain, neck pain and headache. Many women would love to decrease the size of these breasts to increase their level of comfort, but are unhappy to undergo surgery which would leave scars and possibly changed sensation to the nipple. They may not be able to afford the 4 weeks off work or normal lifestyle activities that conventional surgery could take. In contrast, with liposuction to the breasts, it is possible to return to work the day after surgery in many cases.

Liposculpture provides an alternative. For women who are happy with the shape of their breasts and just want them smaller, between 30 and 50% of the volume of the breast can be removed by liposculpture, totally under local anaesthetic with mild sedation. The procedure takes one and a half to two hours and there is no loose skin over the breast, it feels much the same as prior to the surgery. In fact, there may be significant retraction of the skin, and elevation of the nipple by 2-3 cm (sometimes more ) is normal. Over the past 10 years over 500 women have undergone this procedure at the Alia Clinic and the results are consistently good.

Here is a typical situation in which liposuction of the breast can make a tremendous difference. The volumes of the breasts have been reduced by some 40%. The breasts appear natural, they are the same shape, but just a lot smaller. They no longer extend to the side of the body to the same extent. There has been a dramatic decrease in the amount of neck and shoulder pain.

Common questions about Breast reduction surgery by liposculpture

Who is a candidiate for liposcupture to the breasts ?

Any woman with large and heavy breasts, who is happy with the shape of her breasts, but just wants them smaller can be considered for this procedure. Women of any age may be suitable, but as women age they become more suitable for the procedure as there is a higher proportion of fatty tissue. There is NO maximum age, the oldest women treated at Alia Clinic to date for breast reduction was 86 at the time of the procedure.

Is anyone not a good candidate for breast liposculpture?

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding can not have the procedure, but most other women can be suitable candidates.

When will my symptoms of heaviness, aching improve?

Usually there will be an improvement within 1-2 days,YES 1-2 days after surgery .

Is it permanent ?

Yes, the reduction in the size of the breasts is permanent, provided that your weight remains stable after the procedure.

Are there any scars or changes to the nipple sensation?

The small access holes are 1-2mm wide. There are usually 2-3 per side and these settle very quickly. They are not sutured after the procedure and essentially are invisible after a couple of weeks. As all the instruments used in this surgery are quite blunt, there is generally no change to how the nipple feels. This is very different to conventional surgery, where a large inverted T-shape incision is made and some of the nerves to the skin of the breast can be cut, altering sensation permanently.

Are any special tests necessary?

A mammogram is required before the procedure and again six months after the procedure is finished. This will act as a new baseline for mammograms that you may have in the future.

What support garments are required ?

A special compressive chest garment (supplied by the clinic) is used for the first 2 days after the procedure and then a support bra is used for a further 2 weeks to a month after the procedure.

How long does the procedure take?

Most breast reduction procedures take from between 1 1/2 to 2 hours to complete.

How much time will I need off?

In general you should plan on taking 2 to 3 days off work. It would be about 3 weeks before normal gym activities or jogging could be started.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate ?

Yes. Medicare will cover about 65% of the costs !!

And the cost ?

Most procedures cost $7800 total. There is no GST on this procedure. Medicare and Medicare Safety Net rebates provide about a $5000 rebate. For an accurate costing, please use the online consultation or make an appointment.
