Breast Reduction

Liposculpture of the breast is the treatment of choice in the reduction of breast size and improvement in breast shape in men. Many men are often embarrassed by large or unusual shaped breasts which may appear feminine or unathletic. Often a dramatic change in size is achieved and it is possible to return to work the following day in most cases. 2 or 3 small access points are used in each breast and disappear quickly after the procedure.

Even removal of relatively small volumes of fat and breast tissue from around the nipple and breast area generally can achieve dramatic results. Clothes can fit better, shirts fit more naturally. Quite often the fatty tissue extends around to the side of the chest as both here and below. This is removed at the same time, giving a truly natural looking chest.

Larger volumes can be taken from the breast and to the side as appropriate. The result is the same, a more clean unbulky appearance.

Occasionally ( approximately 1 in 20 cases), a small incision is needed to remove breast tissue from underneath the nipple. A few small sutures are positioned for ten days.

Who is a candidate for liposcupture to the breasts ?

Any man with enlarged breasts or breasts which have an unusual distribution of fatty tissue or breast tissue.

Is anyone not a good candidate for breast liposculpture?

If a large proportion of the breast volume is not fat but breast tissue, especially if this is firm, liposculpture to the breast may be less successful. This is unusual, most men with large breasts are good candidates. In such cases the breast tissue must be removed through a small incision in the lower section of the nipple.

Is it permanent ?

Yes, the reduction in the size of the breasts is permanent, provided that your weight remains stable after the procedure.

Are there any scars or changes to the nipple sensation?

The small access holes are 2-3mm wide. There are usually 2-3 per side and these settle very quickly. They are not sutured after the procedure and essentially are invisible after a couple of weeks. As all the instruments used in this surgery are quite blunt, there is generally no change to how the nipple feels.

What support garments are required ?

A special compressive singlet-like chest garment is used for 10-12 days after the procedure.

How long does the procedure take ?

Most breast reduction procedures take from between 1 1/2 to 2 hours to complete.

How much time will I need off?

In general you should plan on taking a day off work or slightly longer if your work is active. It would be about 3 weeks before normal gym activities or jogging should be restarted.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate ?

Many liposculpture procedures to the breast in men qualify for Medicare rebates. Speak to the Alia Clinic doctor about this.
